How to Choose Cannabis Flower: THC, Strain, Quality and Price Explained

THC, strain, price tier and size, and why the highest number on the menu is rarely the best place to start.

Walk into a dispensary with a big flower menu and the number of options can be a little overwhelming.

Different strains. Different prices. Different THC percentages. Indica, Sativa, Hybrid. Different sizes.

The good news is that choosing flower doesn’t need to be complicated.

Here are the main things worth looking at.

Start With What You’re Looking For

Before comparing THC percentages or strain names, start with the simplest question:

What kind of experience are you looking for?

You might be looking for something generally described as:

  • Relaxed
  • Happy
  • Creative
  • Energetic
  • Focused
  • Uplifted

That gives you a better starting point than automatically choosing the strongest or most expensive flower on the menu.

Indica, Sativa or Hybrid?

These labels are useful for narrowing down a large selection.

Indica is commonly associated with more relaxed characteristics.

Sativa is traditionally associated with more uplifting or energetic characteristics.

Hybrid sits somewhere in the middle and covers a very broad range of strains.

Just remember that these labels aren’t exact predictions. Research has found that Indica and Sativa labels do not consistently reflect the full genetic and chemical makeup of cannabis strains. (Nature)

Use them as a guide, not the entire decision.

What Does THC Percentage Mean?

THC is the main intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis.

A flower listed at 28% THC contains a higher concentration of THC than one listed at 18%, but that doesn’t automatically make the 28% flower the better choice.

Higher-THC products can have stronger intoxicating effects, and how cannabis affects someone also depends on factors including previous experience, amount consumed, and individual biology. (CDC)

If you already know the THC range you tend to enjoy, that can be useful when filtering a menu.

If you don’t, there’s no reason to automatically chase the highest number.

What Does Price Tell You?

At MuMu’s, flower is available across several price levels.

That’s intentional.

Not every customer is looking for the same thing, and not every purchase needs to be from the highest-priced shelf.

Differences in price can reflect things such as the batch, cultivation, availability, flower structure, demand, or where a particular product sits within the store’s selection.

A lower-priced ounce can be a good fit for someone looking for value, while another customer may prefer spending more on a particular strain or higher-tier batch.

The important thing is having options.

Choose the Right Size

Flower is commonly available in sizes such as:

  • 3.5g / 1⁄8 oz
  • 7g / 1⁄4 oz
  • 14g / 1⁄2 oz
  • 28g / 1 oz

If you’re trying a strain for the first time, a smaller size can make sense.

If you already know what you like, buying a larger amount may offer better value depending on the current menu and promotions.

Pay Attention to the Actual Flower

Numbers on a menu are useful, but they aren’t everything.

Good flower should look and smell like a product that has been handled and stored properly.

Appearance, aroma, freshness, trim, and overall condition can all be useful when evaluating a batch.

This is also why two batches of the same strain name may not always be identical.

Don’t Ignore the Staff

One of the easiest ways to narrow a large menu is simply to ask what’s good right now.

Inventory changes.

Batches change.

Deals change.

The people working with the products every day often know which flower is moving, what customers are coming back for, and which options offer particularly good value at that moment.

That’s much more useful than blindly picking the product with the largest THC number.

Finding Flower at MuMu’s

MuMu’s carries a large rotating flower selection at different price points.

The menu is designed to make it easier to browse by:

  • Strain
  • Indica / Sativa / Hybrid
  • Price tier
  • Size
  • Effect

You can browse what’s currently available online, reserve your order, and pick it up at the store.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Does higher THC mean better flower?

No. THC measures one aspect of cannabis potency, but it does not measure overall product quality or guarantee a particular experience.

Is more expensive flower always better?

Not necessarily. Price can reflect many things, including batch, availability and product tier. The right option depends on what you value and what you want to spend.

What size should I buy if I’m trying a new strain?

A smaller amount can be a practical way to try something unfamiliar before committing to a larger quantity.

How often does the MuMu’s flower menu change?

Inventory rotates regularly, so strains, batches, prices and availability may change from week to week.

Try picking by effect.

Relax, Focus, Sleep, Social, Creative. Filter the menu the way this post describes.
