Ounce vs. Eighth: How Much You Save Buying Weed in Bulk

An ounce is eight eighths. At New York’s average eighth price that’s about $312 — at MuMu’s, ounces start at $60. Here’s the savings math, tier by tier.

Short answer: an ounce is 28 grams, the same as eight eighths. At New York’s average price of $38.96 an eighth, eight eighths cost about $312. At MuMu’s, a full ounce costs $60 to $250, so you save roughly $60 to $250 compared with buying the same amount by the eighth.

Most dispensaries in New York are built around the eighth. MuMu’s is built around the ounce, and that’s a big part of why our prices look the way they do. Here’s how cannabis weights work, how much buying in bulk saves you, and how to keep an ounce fresh once you have it.

Cannabis weights, explained

SizeGramsEighths
Gram1 g—
Eighth3.5 g1
Quarter7 g2
Half ounce14 g4
Ounce28 g8

The names come from fractions of an ounce. An eighth is one-eighth of an ounce, a quarter is a quarter of an ounce, and so on. If you smoke a gram a day, an eighth lasts about three or four days and an ounce lasts about four weeks.

The math: an ounce at MuMu’s vs. eight eighths

New York’s Office of Cannabis Management put the average eighth at $38.96 in its spring 2025 price analysis (source). Eight of those cost about $312. Here’s how each of our ounce tiers compares.

MuMu’s ounceWorks out per eighth8 eighths at NY averageYou save
$60$7.50$312about $252
$75$9.38$312about $237
$100$12.50$312about $212
$150$18.75$312about $162
$200$25.00$312about $112
$250$31.25$312about $62

The state average mixes every quality level together, so it isn’t a perfect like-for-like comparison. But even our top-shelf $250 ounce works out cheaper per eighth than the average eighth in New York. Nobody around here puts this quality on the scale for this price.

Why MuMu’s sells flower by the ounce

Selling by the ounce keeps things simple and keeps prices low. There’s less packaging, less handling and one honest price per strain. You get more flower for your money, and you come back less often. The price on the board is what you pay: no membership, no coupon codes, no crossed-out “was” price.

You can see every ounce we carry, sorted by price, on our Ounce Deals page, or read how much an ounce of weed costs in New York for the full price breakdown.

Stack the savings: Buy 2 Get 1 Free

A select fresh batch of top-tier flower is on a power sale in store right now: buy two ounces and get the third free on select $150 and $300 ounces. On the $150 ounces, that’s three ounces for $300, or $100 an ounce ($12.50 an eighth) for top-shelf flower. The strains change with each batch, so ask at the counter at either store which ones are in.

Is an ounce too much?

Not if you store it right. Flower kept well stays fresh for months. A few simple rules:

  • Use an airtight glass jar. Plastic bags let air in and crush the buds.
  • Keep it cool and dark. Heat and sunlight break down THC and terpenes, which is where the flavor lives.
  • Mind the humidity. A two-way humidity pack (58% or 62%) stops flower drying out or getting damp.
  • Skip the fridge and freezer. Temperature swings cause moisture, and freezing makes trichomes brittle.
  • Keep it away from kids and pets.

Also remember the legal limit: adults 21 and over in New York can carry up to 3 ounces of flower at a time.

Choosing your ounce

If you’re new to buying by the ounce, start in the middle. The $100 tier is the biggest on our menu, with strains like Green Crack, Gelato and Jealousy. Not sure between indica and sativa? Our guide to indica vs. sativa vs. hybrid helps you narrow it down.

Reserve online and pay when you pick up at Tonawanda or Irving. Prices above are from the Tonawanda board. Irving’s flower prices can differ, so call (585) 750-6879 for today’s Irving prices.

Frequently asked questions

How many eighths are in an ounce?

Eight. An eighth is 3.5 grams and an ounce is 28 grams.

Is it cheaper to buy an ounce of weed?

Yes. The price per gram almost always drops as the size goes up. At MuMu’s, ounces start at $60, which is $7.50 per eighth.

How long does an ounce of weed last?

At a gram a day, about four weeks. Stored in an airtight glass jar somewhere cool and dark, it stays fresh for months.

How much is a quarter of weed?

A quarter is 7 grams, a quarter of an ounce. MuMu’s sells flower by the ounce, and at our prices a quarter’s worth of an ounce comes to $15 to $62.50, which is why the full ounce is usually the better buy.

Can I buy more than one ounce?

Yes. New York lets adults 21 and over carry up to 3 ounces of flower, so you can pick up as many as three ounces in one visit.
